PB&J American WalkAbout
Phyllis Burdge had the first (official) service dog in the state of Kansas. She worked with Jerry Moran (now Congressman, then first term state senator) on the writing and passage of legislation guaranteeing full public access to service dogs for physically disabled people. After spontaneous remission from multiple sclerosis she completed graduate school in Indiana, hospital chaplain residency in Colorado and two AmeriCorps VISTA terms in Kansas. November 20 marks the date in 1998 that she took the first steps in over twelve years. On November 20, 2005 Burdge and her service dog Justice begin the PB&J American WalkAbout through which they traverse America on foot to share the story of renewal and hope.

Craig J. Phillips is a traumatic brain injury survivor as well as a Master’s level Rehabilitation counselor. In 1967 Craig sustained an open skull fracture with right frontal lobe damage and remained in a coma for 3 weeks at the age of 10. Craig underwent brain and skull surgery after waking from the coma. Follow-up EEG’s, cognitive and psyche / social testing revealed that Craig would not be able to succeed academically beyond high school. In 1967 Neurological Rehabilitation was not available, so Craig was essentially on his own. Craig had to re-teach himself how to walk, talk, read, write and speak in complete sentences again. Craig has since obtained both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. For an
in depth view of Craig’s process please read his post, http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/2007/02/18/my-journey-thus-far/. Through out his lifetime Craig developed strategies to overcome many obstacles and in so doing he has achieved far beyond all reasonable expectations. On February 6, 2007 at the encouragement of a friend Craig created “Second Chance to Live” which presents topics in such a way as to encourage, motivate and empower the reader to live life on life’s terms. Craig believes our circumstances are not meant to keep us down, but to build us up.
