 2009 Community
Access Awards
Independence, Inc. has a tradition of recognizing the individuals and businesses that truly make our community the best place for people with disabilities to live, learn, and work. These awards will applaud individuals, employers, businesses or others who have made a significant contribution to the employment of people with disabilities, improved accessibility, or otherwise advanced the integration of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of community life.Our 2009 Community Access Awards were held May 6.

 On the left, Ranita Wilks presents one of our Community Access Awards to Paul Buskirk, Associate Athletics Director at the University of Kansas. Other awards went to Mistie Copas-Thomas, C-Tran Social Worker, the Wakarusa Township Fire Department, Jannah Laing of Ultimate Tan, and Kansas Accessible Sports.

 On the right, Susan Miller and Nina Zuna present the 2009 Roger Williams Community Access Award to Rud and Ann Turnbull, who accepted on behalf of their son, who passed away, Jay Turnbull. We thank Jay for the positive impact he made in advocacy efforts, and in so many peoples lives in our community. He will always be remembered for the spirit and inspiration he gave to so many people.
